Des jardins sur les toits est un projet d' Alternatives, un réseau d'action et de communication pour le développement international.
Alternatives congratulates UQAM's Verdis-Toit project which won a prize in the Forces AVENIR contest, among other aspects for the gardens initiaded by Alternatives.
The winning project has two parts. The first is a study on the installation of green roofs at UQAM, achieved in collaboration with the Urban Ecology Center and UQAM's public interest research group (GRIP). The second part are the two gardens presently in place on the University's terraces. These gardens were achieved thanks to the precious collaboration of Alternatives, who initiated and supported the project by providing expertise and part of the material necessary to carry out a garden of this nature with its self watering containers. The students also succeeded in growing vegetables on top of opening up to the community.
Alternatives hopes that green roofs become more prominent in Montreal and that urban agriculture is supported in the global South. Moreover, the NGO coordinates the Rooftop Garden Project which is inspired by hydroponic cultivation, permaculture and ecological gardening. This project developed gardening containers which facilitate the landscaping of food gardens on mineral surfaces. In the South, Alternatives launched urban gardening initiatives in various countries like Mali and South Africa.
