Alternatives invites you to an outdoor evening of dance with the Elephriends collective with the hip hop rythms of DJ Movez and a screening of the documentary film "Favela Rising."
In Brazil, poverty in urban areas wreaks havoc: hunger, violence, lack of sanitation, racial tensions, drug trafficking, etc. In Rio de Janeiro, millions of youths live in the favelas or slums and suffer the consequences of social injustice. Among them, some resilient youths rise up and form the community group Afroreggae, which helps the most destitute youths through a cultural program of Hip Hop and Afro-Brazilian music.
In Montreal, many youths are also victims of poverty and its consequences. Here, like in Rio de Janeiro, music serves as a vehicle for them to express their revolt, expose the realities of everyday life in the "ghetto," and also to recreate hope.
*The film is in the original Portuguese with English sub-titles.
Cost: Voluntary contribution
Food and drink will be sold at the event.
* In case of rain the event will be held at Alternatives, 3720 Parc Ave, 2nd floor.
